“The internet is a very ‘evil’ and ‘insidious’ thing: it remembers everything. Today people’s faces and personal data are everywhere, and what used to take months to find, we now find in 5 minutes thanks to digital footprints and artificial intelligence.”
On the programme “Other News”, Hayk Gabrielyan, founder of Gabrielyan & Partners Detective Bureau and Chairman of the Association of Private Detectives of Armenia, spoke about the development of private investigation in Armenia, the exposure of international fraud schemes and the importance of digital footprints. As he puts it, a detective carries out a kind of “sanitary clean-up” in society where there is not yet a criminal-law assessment, but there is a problem or a lack of trust. He also sets out the limits of professional ethics:
“We don’t do surveillance in romantic affairs, because invading someone’s private life is a crime. A legal detective protects a person’s constitutional rights rather than violating them.”
Under Hayk Gabrielyan’s leadership, a draft law of the Republic of Armenia “On Private Detective Activity” has been developed, which would allow the field to become a fully fledged institutional service.
