The American wedding is off

We look not for people, but for what they have hidden. The stories presented in the series “The Detective Investigates” are based on real cases investigated by Hayk Gabrielyan, Chairman of the Association of Private Detectives of Armenia, and Gabrielyan & Partners Detective Bureau, Armenia’s only officially registered private detective organisation. Every Friday, Aravot publishes the detective’s extraordinary findings.

The call came from the USA. An ordinary working day.

“Mr. Gabrielyan, this is Mr. Y’s assistant. He would like to speak with you on a personal matter.”

While the line was connecting, we quickly checked, as always, who was behind the call. A billionaire on the Forbes list worth more than USD 75 billion, American, unmarried. A man used to solving his problems without lengthy explanations. He came on the line and got straight to the point.

He was getting married in a week. His fiancée had been his partner for the past four years. He said: I seem to know everything about her, yet something inside won’t let me rest. Doubt. He couldn’t explain why, but it was there. And he wanted us to carry out the most thorough possible investigation into the woman. She was Ukrainian. After the war began, with our client’s help, she had left the country and moved to Europe. He simply wanted to be sure that the person beside him was exactly who she appeared to be.

We agreed. The assistant sent over the details. The woman was 35 and embodied all the beauty and charm of Slavic women. We began the investigation; our preliminary analysis showed a spotless biography. First we contacted our partners in Ukraine. We examined everything — the digital environment, non-digital and documentary traces. Not a single problem. Not a single violation. She had never been late with a bank payment or a utility bill. Not a single court case. Everything was so clean that it was becoming uncomfortable to study. In real life that rarely happens. Our gut feeling was that her biography and digital footprint were too “sterile”.

It turned out that after leaving Ukraine she had lived in Poland, then Germany and finally Switzerland. In every country her flawless record continued consistently. Detective teams from several countries joined the case. We worked for days. In the end, out of the entire stream of data, there was one single photograph. It was her. On an expensive yacht. In a very beautiful dress, with a glass of champagne in her hand. In the background: a beach, a ship, a party. Our European partners said: that’s enough. There’s nothing. You can close the case and tell the client his future wife is a model of honesty and virtue.

But that photo would not let us rest. Pictures like that aren’t taken for no reason. Sometimes an incidental fact becomes the key that sets an investigation on the right track. I remembered an old partner of mine in Israel. I sent him the photo with no explanation and simply asked him to analyse it and work out what was going on. Three days later he called. The yacht had been chartered. The photo was taken on a specific day at a specific city beach. The yacht had been chartered by a fairly well-known man.

That changed everything. We began to look into the connection between that man and the woman. OSINT, open sources, digital traces. And finally we found what we were looking for: a phone number. The yacht had been chartered through that number. On the same day, the same number had sent a message to a very exclusive intimate club operating on the darknet. That was no coincidence.

The next step was nearly impossible: getting into the club and registering. We registered one of our partners there. It wasn’t easy — you needed a regular member to vouch for you. An Italian partner who moved in such circles managed to win the trust of one of the members, who, with great reluctance, vouched for him… And he was accepted. In a semi-restricted section of the club we found the fiancée’s profile. It turned out she had been providing elite escort services through the club for years. High prices, high ratings. The date of the photo matched exactly her meeting with that well-known man — on the yacht he had chartered.

There was one week left before the wedding. I called the client. We had already sent him the full file — photos, correspondence and screenshots of the darknet profile. The silence on the other end felt heavy.

“Mr. Gabrielyan,” his voice finally came through, now completely calm. “Thank you for saving my reputation. And thank you for confirming that my inner voice wasn’t lying to me.”

The big American wedding was called off. No fuss, no explanations. The woman disappeared from the billionaire’s life as quietly as she had entered it. This story convinced me once again of one thing: sometimes the most flawless biographies hide the darkest corners. And the truth is often exactly what we try to escape behind a clean image. Sometimes the most impeccable biographies are the darkest.
